Alberta has introduced legislation that would require ticket resellers to disclose prices and fees upfront and could limit how much they are allowed to charge above face value, Premier Danielle Smith announced Tuesday.

Smith wrote on X on Tuesday that Bill 34 is designed to address a practice familiar to many concert- and sports-goers. "Tickets go on sale, they're gone in seconds, and an hour later the same seats show up online for three times the price, plus fees you only see at checkout," she wrote.

Smith said the legislation would make ticket resale prices and fees more transparent, "with the potential to limit excessive markups."

"Unreasonable ticket resale markups or ticket scalping can put these experiences out of reach for families and fans," she wrote. "Seeing your favorite sports team or band live shouldn't be a luxury only scalpers can afford to sell you."
