Alberta's provincial government introduced right-to-repair legislation on Wednesday that would require manufacturers to give owners access to the parts, tools and repair information needed to fix their own equipment, vehicles, electronics and appliances.

Premier Danielle Smith announced Bill 34 in a post on X on Wednesday, saying the legislation was aimed at reducing dependence on manufacturers and cutting costly delays for Albertans who need repairs done quickly.

"Too often, Albertans are stuck waiting on a manufacturer for parts, tools or repair information, and for farmers in the middle of seeding or harvest, every hour of that wait costs money," Smith wrote on X on Wednesday.

The bill specifically names farmers as a group the legislation is designed to help, alongside drivers and families. Smith said the proposed protections would "reduce reliance on manufacturers and cut down on costly delays."

"You bought it. You should be able to fix it," Smith wrote.
