Unofficial results in Alberta’s provincial referendum will be delayed Monday night after Elections Alberta extended voting hours at 106 voting places that opened late, the last of which is scheduled to close at 10 p.m.

Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure authorized the extensions under the Election Act so voters at the affected locations get the full advertised hours, Elections Alberta said in a news release Monday. The agency said the late openings were caused by various issues that have since been resolved.

In southeastern Alberta, the Bow Island Legion will stay open until 8:14 p.m. and the Foremost Community Hall until 8:11 p.m. Both are in the Taber-Warner electoral division, where Taber Christian Elementary School in Taber will close at 8:15 p.m. No voting places in Medicine Hat, Redcliff or Brooks are on the list.

Most of the affected locations are in Calgary and Edmonton. Westminster School in Edmonton-Glenora is set to be the last to close, at 10 p.m., followed by Constable Daniel Woodall School in Edmonton-South West at 9:20 p.m.

Voting places not on the list close at 8 p.m. Elections Alberta said unofficial results will not be released until its reporting site goes live, which will happen only after every voting place in the province is confirmed closed.

The agency asked voters to be patient with election workers. “Workers at voting locations are your friends, your neighbours and your fellow Albertans,” the release said.

The full list of extended locations is in the release, and voters can check their assigned voting place on the agency’s Where Do I Vote page or by calling 1-877-422-8683.

Once polls close, results will be posted at results.elections.ab.ca, with Question 10 reported first and Questions 1 through 9 after it, Elections Alberta said in an earlier release. Official results are scheduled to be announced Oct. 29.
