The City of Medicine Hat has entered the third and final phase of a long-term planning process for Medicine Hat Regional Airport, with the completed master plan expected by the second quarter of 2027.

According to the city's Shape Your City project page, the Airport Master Plan will cover improvements to meet current and forecasted demand, land use for new projects, environmental and community impacts, and strategies to attract new businesses and services to YXH.

The first two phases — a strategic plan and social and economic impact study, followed by a comprehensive infrastructure assessment — are complete. The infrastructure assessment inventoried major facilities, buildings, systems and equipment, evaluated their condition and remaining service life, and produced a 20-year capital plan for repair, rehabilitation and replacement.

The airport serves southeastern Alberta with commercial air services, air ambulance operations, professional pilot training and general aviation. Emergency and medical aviation users identified in the planning process include CanWest Air, HALO and STARS.

Community input has been gathered through two rounds of engagement. In December 2025, more than 30 stakeholders provided input through the first round. In January 2026, more than 700 residents completed an online survey and nearly 100 attended in-person events.

The city said additional engagement opportunities will be made available as Phase 3 advances, with details to be shared when available. Logan, listed as airport manager, and Ben, listed as an airport planning consultant with HM Aero Aviation Consulting, are identified on the project page as the contacts overseeing the process.
