Medicine Hat's Municipal Planning Commission recommended against a Mustard Seed application to rezone 514 South Railway Street SE on Wednesday, but the proposal will still proceed to city council as required under provincial legislation.

The City of Medicine Hat said in a news release Wednesday that all land use rezoning applications must come before council regardless of whether the Municipal Planning Commission recommends support or not, as set out in the Municipal Government Act.

Council will consider first reading of Bylaw 4904-2026, a bylaw to rezone 514 South Railway Street SE, at its Nov. 2 meeting.

If first reading passes, a public hearing is scheduled for the Dec. 7 council meeting, at which second and third readings would also be considered.

The city said the clarification was issued because of notable public interest in the application. The rezoning notice for 514 South Railway Street SE is available on the city's website for residents who want to follow the process.
