The Town of Redcliff is warning that wipes flushed down toilets can block the sanitary sewer system and leave property owners on the hook for repair costs, the town said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

The town said baby wipes, cosmetic wipes, cleaning wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, cotton swabs and diapers all fall into the category of prohibited materials, regardless of how they are labelled. "Even those marketed as 'flushable' should never be flushed down the toilet," the town wrote.

Blockages caused by these items can lead to costly repairs, sewer backups and service disruptions, the town said. Under the Sanitary Sewer System Bylaw, disposing of wipes and similar products in the sewer system is not permitted, and property owners may be held responsible for repair costs if a blockage is traced to prohibited materials.
