The Alberta government announced Thursday it will give Bow Valley College $5 million to advance planning for a potential Health Care Centre of Excellence, covering design work, project scoping and detailed cost estimates.

The province said in a news release dated Oct. 29 that the funding is meant to move the proposal into a more detailed phase, giving the college a stronger basis for assessing next steps rather than committing to construction of the facility.

Bow Valley College already offers programs for practical nurses, psychiatric nurses, pharmacy technicians, health care aides, interdisciplinary therapy assistants and recreation therapy aides, as well as programs in mental health and addiction services. The province said a centre of excellence could expand training in those and other fields.

"Albertans need more health care professionals, and that starts with training them here at home," the release quoted a government official as saying. "This $5 million will help Bow Valley College build a strong plan for a Health Care Centre of Excellence, so we can make smart decisions about preparing students for the careers our health system needs most."

A second quote in the release said the investment "brings us one step closer to improving access to care for Albertans and strengthening Alberta's health care workforce," adding that the proposed centre would expand training opportunities and give students access to "modern learning environments with more hands-on experience, helping prepare graduates to serve communities across Alberta."

The release did not attribute either quote to a named official.

According to the release, Alberta's 2025–2035 Occupational Outlook projects significant shortages across health occupations. The proposed centre, if it proceeds, could include specialized health care labs, simulation spaces and classrooms, subject to planning outcomes and future funding decisions.

The province said planning results from this phase will inform any decision on potential next steps, including whether to proceed with construction funding.
