Alberta will not turn clocks back one hour this Sunday, the provincial government said Friday, as the province moves to a permanent time standard it is calling Alberta Time.

The Government of Alberta wrote on X on Friday that while many other jurisdictions would set clocks back this weekend, Alberta would not — and that there would be no spring-forward adjustment next March either.

"This Sunday, many jurisdictions will turn their clocks back by one hour. Alberta will not," the post said. "This weekend, Alberta begins Alberta Time (ABT) — that means no 'fall back' this November and no 'spring forward' next March."

The change means Alberta will be one hour ahead of most of Canada's mountain time zone jurisdictions beginning Sunday, when neighbouring Saskatchewan — which does not observe daylight time — and the rest of the province will share the same clock for the winter months before diverging again in spring.

No further details about the legislative or regulatory basis for the change were included in the government's post.
