The winter rules run from Oct. 15 through April 15 each year. Under them, retailers cannot fully cut off a residential electricity customer during that period. Natural gas customers will receive the same protection beginning Nov. 1, the province said.
Beyond the seasonal window, the province said disconnections are prohibited at any time of year when temperatures are forecast to fall below zero within 24 hours of a planned cut-off.
Customers who have already been disconnected will be contacted by the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA), which works with the Alberta Utilities Commission, utility retailers and distributors, and agencies including Alberta Supports to help restore service before winter, the province said.
Albertans who need help paying utility bills, arranging a payment plan or resolving a dispute with their provider can reach the UCA at 310-4822 or through the UCA website.
