Independent Investigators Called In After Cold Lake RCMP Shooting

Alberta's independent police watchdog is investigating after a Cold Lake RCMP officer discharged a service weapon during a domestic call early Tuesday morning, leaving a suspect in stable condition in hospital.

RCMP say officers responded to a domestic call involving a weapon at approximately 9:47 a.m. on August 4. During the encounter, an officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect, who was transported to hospital and is listed in stable condition.

As is standard practice whenever a police officer's actions result in serious injury, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to conduct an independent investigation. ASIRT probes are separate from RCMP internal reviews and are intended to ensure public accountability in cases involving police use of force.

RCMP say no further details will be released while the investigation is ongoing, and have asked the public to direct any questions about the incident to ASIRT rather than the local detachment.
