Workers have begun removing 12 dead or dying trees in Riverside Veterans' Memorial Park, with the City of Medicine Hat saying the trees were identified because of poor health and the hazard they pose to park users.

The city said in a notice published Monday that the removals are taking place at various locations around the park. Work may continue after the Thanksgiving long weekend.

The city said it will plant more than 12 trees in the park in spring 2027 to replace those being taken down. The work is part of the city's Urban Canopy Enhancement Initiative, funded through the Growing Canada's Community Canopies grant program.

The city asked people to avoid areas where crews are working to give them room to operate.
