The provincial government, the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation celebrated the opening together, according to a Government of Saskatchewan news release dated Oct. 23. The province committed more than $134 million toward the project, with additional costs for furniture, fixtures and equipment covered by community donors and the foundation.
The new hospital includes 25 private acute care rooms, each equipped with a ceiling lift and a larger accessible washroom, along with 10 inpatient mental health beds. The facility also houses one of Saskatchewan's largest operating theatres, an expanded emergency department with trauma care spaces, upgraded laboratory and medical imaging areas, an onsite Emergency Medical Services base and a heliport to support transfers of critically ill or injured patients.
Rural and Remote Health Minister Lori Carr said the hospital would give Weyburn and surrounding communities modern access to care. "I am so proud to see the beautiful new Weyburn General Hospital fully equipped and ready to provide modern, convenient access to high-quality health care for Weyburn and surrounding communities," Carr said in the release.
SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Sean Wilson said the project represented a long-term investment in the region. "This facility provides the modern infrastructure needed to deliver high-quality care and strengthens the region's ability to serve patients well into the future," Wilson said.
Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO Andrew Will said the design was intended to bring services together for patients, families and care teams. "This modern facility was designed to meet the needs of patients, families and care teams, bringing services together under one roof to support integrated, patient-centred care and an enhanced health care experience," Will said.
Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation Board Chair Melissa Swayze said the opening reflected broad community support. "This is an exciting milestone for our community and a testament to the generosity, compassion, and commitment of the people who support health care in our region," Swayze said.
The hospital is set to receive its first patients on Nov. 1.
