Alberta RCMP Hand Out Over 1,100 Tickets in Heritage Day Crackdown

Alberta RCMP handed out more than 1,100 tickets over the Heritage Day long weekend as part of a province-wide traffic safety campaign, with speeding and impaired driving among the top offences.

Officers issued 1,107 tickets in total, including 513 for speeding, 27 for distracted driving and 20 for seatbelt violations. Police also removed 90 impaired drivers from the road over the long weekend, with a breakdown of roadside suspensions and criminal charges under the Immediate Roadside Sanctions program.

The long weekend also saw 28 collisions resulting in injury and five fatal crashes across the province, underscoring the risks of the holiday travel period. "Every ticket we write is aimed at getting drivers to slow down, buckle up and pay attention," said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull. "The number of impaired drivers we took off the road this weekend shows why this enforcement matters."

Alberta RCMP say the enforcement blitz will continue through the remainder of the summer as part of ongoing efforts to reduce collisions and fatalities on provincial highways.
