The Medicine Hat Police Service issued a list of Halloween safety reminders on Friday, encouraging families to take precautions as children head out trick-or-treating across the city.

In a post on Facebook, the service said younger children should have a trusted adult walk with them to every door, and that all trick-or-treaters should travel in groups and stick to familiar neighbourhoods.

The service advised families to plan a route before heading out and to follow basic road safety: look both ways before crossing, stay on one side of the street, and cross at the end of the block rather than zigzagging.

Children should carry a flashlight and visit only homes with their lights on, the service said, adding that kids should never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.

On costumes, the service recommended bright colours or reflective tape to make children easier to see, and suggested face paint instead of masks that can block vision. Dressing for the weather was also advised.

"Check all treats before eating and throw away anything unwrapped or unsealed," the service wrote in the post.

Homeowners were asked to turn on exterior lights and keep candles and other flammable items out of children's reach. The service also asked that pets be kept secured for the evening, saying the steady stream of unfamiliar visitors can be frightening for animals.

Adults celebrating Halloween were reminded to arrange a safe ride home before the night begins.
